The holiday season is approaching quickly, and with Christmas just a couple of months away, it is the perfect time to look back at how people come together when it matters most. Over the last two Christmases, I have had the privilege of documenting a deeply moving private tradition led by talk show host Tommy Sablan: the annual “Breaking and Entering Christmas” surprises.
2024
To keep the magic completely intact, these events are entirely private. They take place at invite-only, confidential locations where a specific circle of people gather in secret. The sole purpose is to pull off a massive, unexpected meetup to surprise a deserving family or individual going through a difficult time.

The Magic of the Behind-the-Scenes Crew
Looking at the photos from two Christmases ago brings back the intense, electric energy of the setup. This initiative wouldn’t be possible without Tommy’s wonderful staff and helpers. The photos show them moving at lightning speed—unloading boxes, hanging decorations, wrapping gifts, and transforming the private location into a winter wonderland in what feels like seconds. Nobody wanted to ruin the secret, and seeing the staff pour their entire hearts into the layout is inspiring. Tommy has an incredible ability to rally a specific group of people who are willing to do whatever it takes to pull off a miracle.

The Shock of the Reveal

For a family or an individual carrying a heavy burden, walking into a beautifully decorated room full of people dedicated entirely to supporting them is overwhelming. The images capture that sudden shift from confusion to tears, deep relief, and tight hugs. It is the moment they realize they aren’t alone in their struggles.
